About the area

The Dordogne is an area of the Aquitaine Region in the south-west of France. The third largest department in the country, the Dordogne can be split into four colour coded areas: purple for grapes (south-west), black for mushrooms, white for the limestone hills (around Perigueux) and green for its lush forests (north). The Dordogne is well known for its gastronomic specialties, including truffles, walnuts and wine. Around 45% of the Dordogne is forest but a large proportion of the landscape is dominated with vines–around 245,000 acres. The River Dordogne stretches for 300 miles crossing the entire region from the Auverne Mountains to the Gironde Estuary near Bordeaux and is where the region gets it's name from.
