About the area

Benalmadena is a large municipality (16.77 square miles) with three differentiated areas. Benalmadena Pueblo (village) is a tranquil and quaint whitewashed village with magnificent views of the coast. It is as well the original settlement and its name comes from the Arabic 'Ibn al-ma'din', which translates as 'children of the miners'. In the 60s Arroyo de la Miel started a quick development for which the train stop was a key factor. It's a lively area with lots of restaurants, bars, banks, cafés, a health centre, an ice rink, supermarkets, and other services. The communities here are mostly Spanish but there are many foreign residents as well. The third area is by the sea, and it’s called Benalmadena Costa (Coast) which covers the whole length of the municipal coastline, from Torremolinos in the East to Fuengirola in the West. With the arrival of mass tourism in the 60s this area became extremely popular and the whole coastline is massively built up by now. Apartment blocks and hotels are lined up one after the other. This area is where most ex-pats are based. On the coast you can find amenities as cafés, bars, and restaurants as well as a Marina, the Bil-Bil castle and the Benalmadena Museum. Málaga Costa del Sol Airport is the nearest international airport with direct flights arriving from most English Cities Including every airport in London–the flight from the UK takes a little under 3 hours. There is an extensive bus route linking the three areas of Benalmadena with each other and Málaga City and the airport.
