Having been married for 19 years, Diane and David from North Wales feel the time is right to relocate to Spain, where they’re looking for a new forever home in the countryside around Almeria. The couple would love a character property close to their favourite town of Arboleas and have asked Danni Menzies to help them with their house hunt. After scouring the market, Danni has 5 great options to show them for their £150,000 budget, but will any be their perfect property?

Inland Almeria

What's the appeal?

Almeria is in south eastern Spain and is pretty easy to get to – you can fly there from most UK airports in around three hours, then it’s about an hour and a quarter’s drive to the inland area near the town of Arboleas where we’re looking for properties. This province is in the Andalusia region – it’s one of the driest parts of Spain and the arid landscape has been used in a number of Spaghetti Westerns, including the Good the Bad and the Ugly. Arboleas is a small town located on the Valley of the Almazora river. It is a beautiful valley with orange and olive tree groves and small orchards. A large portion of the population is formed by European ex-pats. Belgians, Dutch, French and British are an important part of this community.

Three-bed villa in Los Llanos

Our first property is in a popular urbanization called Los Llanos, just north of Arboleas. This villa has a good sized pool with a surrounding terrace area outside. Inside there’s a large light filled lounge with a wood burning fireplace, separate dining room, fitted kitchen, a master bedroom with en suite shower room, two more bedrooms and a family bathroom. Our next property is in the village of Los Carrascos, just south of Arboleas. Its beautiful views make it a very sought after area. This bungalow has loads of outside space including a gravelled area for parking, a courtyard garden, and a lovely pool area which has stunning views of the mountains. Five-bed villa in El Puertecico

Our third property is a more traditional villa, the most rural we’ve seen, in the hamlet of El Puertecico, nearly an hour from the coast. This recently renovated cortijo has a lovely pool, a covered al fresco living and dining area, and an outbuilding with a courtyard. Inside there’s a dining room, a snug with a wood burner, a fitted kitchen and an upstairs living room which leads onto a balcony with stunning views over the countryside.
