Funchal, Madeira - A Place in the Sun

Maderia is part of a group of Portuguese islands in the north Atlantic, south of Portugal and north of the canaries and it’s just under 4 hours flight from the UK to Madeira airport. 20 minutes drive from the airport is Funchal, the island’s capital and the focus of our search. The city has a population of 111,892, making it the sixth largest city in Portugal, and has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries. Because of its high cultural and historical value, Funchal is one of Portugal's main tourist attractions. It is also popular as a destination for New Year's Eve, and it is the leading Portuguese port on cruise liner dockings
