Gavalochori maintained its importance and population during Ottoman rule (1646-1898), and during the revolution of 1821, Gavalochori became the seat of the "Cretan Council". In Gavalochori, visitors can see well-preserved examples of folk architecture, such as a two-aisled vaulted olive mill of the 18th century, the churches of Panagia (Virgin Mary) and Agios Sergios, the old school, and many old houses from the Venetian era.
