With over an acre of mature gardens where towering palms and huge flamboyants decorate the views looking down to the sea, across to St Kitts and up to the Peak, this is surely one of the most peacefully situated properties on the island.
When the views are this exceptional, the home must be dedicated to them. Rooms lead out to terraces, some covered and some open to the bright sun. An internal louvred window can be pulled across so it is possible to look through from the main bedroom right across the sunken sitting room to the outside world. Designed by an artist, the house has a lot of character and personality, and thought has gone into every angle of the design. Even the fifty foot lap pool has been discretely inserted, a stretching sliver of blue that nestles between the main house and the guest cottage. The two are connected by the terrace at one end and across an enchanting Venetian-style arched bridge at the other.
Open plan living has been redefined in Amazing Grace. The windows and doors are meant to be thrown open, to link up the inside and outside. The seating areas on the wraparound verandah as much a part of the home as the sitting room. The kitchen too has been carefully thought through, with the cupboard doors reflecting the white-louvred design used throughout for external openings.
Guests can be housed close by but also in almost complete privacy, with a careful use of spaces ensuring hidden outside seating areas for their use. An oversize guest cottage is light and bright and comes complete with a full en suite. A second area for guests is accessed underneath the main property: again, the en suite bedroom has access to its own terrace. In the garden, a gazebo beckons the lone afternoon reader or a breakaway Bridge party.
The main house also has a second bedroom, currently used as a study and perfectly placed for flexible use either as that or as a library or child’s bedroom. With the house set at an elevation of 600 feet, there will be the occasional evening in the winter months when a snug would certainly be appreciated. The hottest days of midsummer are cooled by the breezes here.
Amazing Grace is a beautifully appointed home full of character, that offers the ideal pairing of comfort and practicality. It is, at heart, a Caribbean home: there’s gingerbread trim, white-painted vaulted ceilings, and a sense that the outdoors is as important as the indoors. While it has been used successfully for many years mixing private and holiday rental use, it would also make an excellent permanent home for those seeking an exclusively located retreat.
