The name Cetraro, among a few theories, it is said comes from the abundant production of lemons (in Latin citrus) that are grown in the surrounding countryside. From ancient origins, Cetraro was probably the first seaside city of Bruzia and in recent years the beach front has developed around its stretch of sandy beaches providing an array of activities, beach bars and lidos throughout the summer months with many festivals, music concerts and theatre spectacles hosted. The Marina boasts a variety of shops, boutiques, café bars, restaurants, supermarket etc. and an outdoor market each Saturday morning. At the far end of the beach front is a tourist port where small boats can be moored. In contrast, the historic centre is full of narrow streets, arches and beautiful views. Access to the city is via three gates: di Mare, Basso and Sopra, which bear witness to the time when Cetraro was a fortified town. A few steps from the main square (Piazza del Popolo) is located the Mother Church of San Benedetto Abate. Built before 1104 following the donation of Cetraro and renovated in the Baroque style during the second half of the eighteenth century. This is one of the many historical points of interest to be found in the historical centre.
Close by are the Thermal Springs at Guardia Piemontese offering curative mineral waters and mud baths for a variety of conditions with the Terme Luigiane providing Spa treatments from May to October.
There is a 9 hole golf course at the nearby Hotel San Michele and for the more adventurous rafting, paragliding and quad biking can be found at Scalea.
The larger town of Paola is approx. 10 mins drive south of Cetraro and here there is a captivating mix of ancient and modern – from the Sanctuary and birthplace of San Francesco di Paola to the amenities required for modern living eg, shops, bars, restaurants, a long stretch of beach with beach bars and lidos in the summer months and several festivals hosted throughout the year. Cetraro is also conveniently positioned to explore many other traditional villages and the stunning National Park of La Sila is approx. 1 ½ hour drive away, where you can take advantage of the many activities that are on offer, including walking, pony trekking, quad bikes and in the winter months, skiing.
