The Grande-Dame of the Alps, the high-altitude resort of Alpe d'Huez has many claims to fame: it was where the beloved button-lift system was first invented. It was one of the first villages in France to welcome skiers (as early as 1904), and finally, it is a reputable stop of the Tour de France. Alpe d'Huez has recently agreed on a 350 million euro investment to link the resort with Les Deux Alpes, thereby creating the third largest ski domain with 450 km of pistes by 2020.

The 350 million euro investment led by the municipal government, was announced in 2016 to bring the resort up to the high-standards of its increasingly wealthy visitors.
