Viareggio is set on the sea front with a wide golden beach and art deco buildings along the main street. There is a marina and excellent sailing opportunities. Viareggio is set at the end of the Versilia golden coast. Versilia is the stretch of golden sandy coast from the tip of Liguria to Viareggio, the southernmost resort on the Italian Riviera. Liberty style buildings housing fashionable shops, cafes, and seafood restaurants line the promenade. Viareggio is famous for the annual Carnevale dating back to 1873 with large papier-mâché floats which parade along the promenade known as the "Passeggiata a mare". In nearby Forte dei Marmi you can shop in the upmarket designer shops or while away the evening 'people watching' in the pretty central piazza, where the bars serve refreshing camparis.
The property is close to exclusive beaches and just a short drive from Pietrasanta, Pisa and Lucca. Pietrasanta is a popular destination for artists and sculptors who have been visiting and living there for centuries. The town hosts many art exhibitions and in the summer there are open air concerts in the elegant piazza. Excellent quality restaurants and boutiques line the cobbled lanes leading from the central piazza. The town has always attracted artists and sculptors and there are many exhibitions held wither in the piazza or in one of the beautiful vaulted halls. Michelangelo obtained the blocks of pure white marble for his famous works from the mountains nearby. The golden sandy beaches at Marina di Pietrasanta and the prestigious Forte dei Marmi offer a variety of private and public beach spots.
Lucca is one of the best-loved Tuscan cities. The Roman amphitheatre is seen in the shape of the central, oval Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, an ideal place to sip an aperitivo and watch the world go by. Lucca is famous for beautiful towers and many of the most important towers and villas date from the 12th to 16th centuries. Unusually, as the city grew and modernised, the walls which surrounded the old town were retained, which was not the case for many other cities in Tuscany, including Florence. As the walls lost their military importance, the top of the walls became a pedestrian promenade, which today are one of Lucca's main attractions. The area around the walls is beautiful parkland with green grass and lovely trees. This park surrounds the city and blocks out modern life. You can pick up rental bikes of all sizes and enjoy a bike ride around the entire perimeter, or a stroll as you enjoy a gelato or simply a period of rest from sightseeing on one of the many shaded benches which line the main walkway. Other attractions include the Piazza of San Michele with its beautiful Church of San Michele in Foro, the Basilica of San Frediano as well as the Clock Tower and the famous Guinigi Tower, with extraordinary, tall trees growing at the top. The rooftop views are magnificent. The nearby Torre del Lago hosts a summer Puccini festival with operas performed in the open air in a spectacular setting.
Further inland is Bagni di Lucca, a spa town. In the nineteenth century Bagni di Lucca became an exclusive retreat for Europe’s nobility and and visitors will find that the spas are still active today. The nearby Canyon Adventure Park offers canyoning, rafting, zip wiring and yoga. Also within striking distance is the ski resort of Abetone. Pisa airport in just half an hour.
Distances: Viareggio 5 km, Pietrasanta 8 km, Forte dei Marmi 10 km, Lucca 30 kms, Pisa (airport) 35 kms, Bagni di Lucca 50 kms, Cinque Terre 65 km, Abetone (skiing) 90 km, Florence 90 km.
